Policy-Based Billing Architecture for Internet Differentiated Services
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Differentiated Services architecture allows a service provider to configure new services dynamically using a policy protocol. This benefit, however, may not be fully realized if the service provider need a high effort to update its billing system to charge for the services. Thus, there is a real need for a flexible billing architecture. To meet this need, a policy-based billing architecture is proposed in this paper. This architecture allows a service provider to define policies for configuring various processes of a billing system based on the charging and pricing schemes used for individual services. Definitions of policies for various charging and pricing schemes are discussed and the potential complexity of each of them is analyzed. Based on the complexity analysis four classes of services, which utilize the least complex charging schemes and require the minimum traffic metering effort, are recommended for meeting different application requirements.

The main drawback of the current Internet is the lack of Quality-of-Service (QoS) support. QoS support, however, is essential for business and real-time applications such as Internet Telephony and on-line video retrieval. During the last years the Internet community spent many efforts to develop an Internet QoS architecture based on the Integrated Services (IntServ) model and based on the Resou...

By developing the new services such as VoIP and Videoconference, using a mechanism is needed to support the quality of service of the application programs. Different models have been presented to guarantee the quality of service. Among these, the differentiated services can be mentioned which was presented by IETF. In the architecture of the differentiated services, no admission control mechani...

This paper presents an architecture for combining the Internet approach for the support of multimedia services with switched ATM network technology. As the idea is to avoid changes on the underlying technologies, we introduce an Edge Devise (ED) which provides all functionality required for the efficient support of Internet Integrated Services (IntServ) through switched ATM networks. Core funct...
متن کاملPolicy Based Architecture for QoS over Differentiated Services Network
Current Internet architecture is based on the Best Effort (BE) model, where packets can be dropped indiscriminately in the event of congestion. This architecture attempts to deliver all traffic as soon as possible within the limits of its abilities, but without any guarantees about throughput, delay and packet loss etc. Though such a model works well for certain traditional applications such as...
متن کاملA Flexible Time-based Pricing Policy for Charging Internet Services
The integration of telecommunications and data networks enables Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to develop increasingly services to attract customers. Designing rational pricing plans is very important for ISPs to reflect actual cost and to promote different services. In this paper, we discuss the applicability of the duration-based pricing scheme for charging Internet services that constantl...
